"Describe briefly some success your group has achieved and how it has helped to build your group and make your neighborhood stronger. "We have done a lot in our few short months of existence as an association. We did all of this without funding from the city. We contributed a lot from our own pockets.General Meetings: The first general association meeting was held in May 2007 because of neighborhood concerns regarding traffic safety and crime prevention, along with a general hope to foster a stronger neighborhood by simply getting to know one’s neighbors. During the meeting, a questionaire was distributed and the answers collated to determine membership interests / priorities. In subsequent General Meetings, we have hosted a number of speakers including the San Jose Police Department; our Councilman, Pete Constant; and our Mayor, Chuck Reed. For the next General Meeting, we are pursuing the possibilities of either a talk on Pandemic Flu by the Santa Clara County Health Department, ‘Neighborhood Watch’ by the SJ Crime Prevention Group, or on Calabazas Library by their librarian. Traffic Safety: By working with Pete Constant and our police department, additional crossing guards have been added.
(Can someone who is familiar with this detail this in some more?) -- I don't think we got more crossing guards but there was an issue raised by a parent from Meyerholz. Neighborhood Outreach: Block leaders have been responsible for notifying all homes within the neighborhood via flyers left on doorsteps. We created a website (currently moving over to a WIKI site so that all members may easily contribute/edit), and maintain an email dlist of all registered homes. Library: We provided and continue to provide strong neighborhood feedback on the Calabazas Library expansion. (
More details?) -- Not sure how to word this, but this needs to be somewhat stronger - Dong and Marylou did a lot.Garage Sale: In October of 2007, we sponsored our neighborhood garage sale. Any household within the neighborhood boundary was welcome to sign up for no fee. A map was available online which highlighted all of the participating homes. Advertising was provided online, through local newspapers and with banners, and signs throughout the neighborhood. In addition, sellers were provided with a package containing a sign for advertising their home, and a set of flyers containing a map of all homes participating in the garage sale. Emergency Preparedness: Members of our Emergency Preparedness Committee have taken the ‘Personal Emergency Preparedness’ class, and one is curently registered for ‘CERTs’ classes beginning in March (offered by Cupertino). The Emergency Preparedness Committee has set goals for 2008 is to encourage families to prepare for emergencies. We have established a goal of having 40 people trained in ‘Family Emergency Preparedness’/ CPR and/or First Aid classes. The committee is committed to a strong outreach program to inform the neighborhood on how to prepare for emergencies by speaking at every General Meeting, and having a short article included every neighborhood newsletter. The committee is working with a volunteer Emergency Preparedness trainer to provide onsite training to our neighborhood association. (tentatively scheduled for May/June 2008).
